Why Buy Underfloor Heating
Underfloor heating takes two basic forms - wet or dry. The wet system works by circulating hot water through a series of pipes underneath the floor. Dry systems are typically electric, taking the form of mats or ribbon cables that are woven back and forth under the floor. Whichever underfloor heating system you choose, they both have a number of clear advantages over more traditional heating systems.
Aesthetics
One bonus of an underfloor heating system is, quite obviously, that it is under the floor - no space in a room needs to be devoted to radiators or heaters, making them a more aesthetically pleasing option. This can also prove safer for young children where hot surfaces could be hazardous. Electric underfloor systems also have the advantage of requiring very little rise in the floor surface to install them - as little as one millimetre, with short installation times to boot.
Radiation Vs. Convection
Underfloor heating works though radiation, whilst traditional systems use convection currents to spread the warmth around the room. The convection method can cause problems - convection currents rise meaning that the hot air in the room gathers at the top. The result is that your upper body is warmed while your lower body gets cold. This can be quite unpleasant, but it is not a problem with underfloor heating - since the warm air is rising from the floor surface, both the lower body and the lower portion of the room are heated. This is a double-edged sword too - since the heat rises from the bottom of the room, the air has typically cooled by around a couple of degrees by the time it has reached head-height. Since the limbs need to be kept slightly warmer than the head, this cooling effect gives a much more natural, comfortable feel to underfloor heating systems.
Those who suffer from asthma may also benefit from this lack of convection currents in their house, because the still air means that dust doesn't get moved around so much and thus reduces the number of airborne dust mites in the environment. The movement of the air also makes them less energy efficient - convection currents often draw cold air in from outside, (an effect known as 'air-infiltration') which will reduce the overall temperature of a room and cause the radiators to have to work even harder to get the same temperature as their underfloor counterparts.
Efficiency
Underfloor heating does not require the high temperatures of traditional radiators. The reason for this is quite simple - a radiator only has a small surface area from which to emit heat, whilst underfloor heating in effect turns the entire floor into a radiator. Consequently, the surface-area to heating-area ratio is far more favourable for underfloor systems than ordinary radiators. This is also why underfloor heating creates an even heat throughout a room because the 'radiator' is spread throughout the entire room.
If an underfloor system is installed on an insulated surface, such as a concrete floor, there is another potential advantage - the system can be turned on during times of low demand, such as during the night, to take advantage of the low cost of electricity. This heats up the insulating floor which will then stay hot for some time after the underfloor system has been switched off, saving on electricity costs.

One final point to make - a correctly set up underfloor heating system can last for decades without ever needing maintenance.
