Underfloor Heating Mats - The Environmental Case
Given the current concerns over the state of the environment, many people are looking for ways in which to make themselves and their homes 'greener' and more energy efficient. Underfloor heating mats provide a fantastic and easy way of doing this for a number of different reasons.
Better Than Traditional Heating
First off, underfloor heating mats do not need to be heated to the same degree as ordinary heating systems, due to the more distributed nature of the heat output. An ordinary radiator works by radiating heat from its surface to create convection currents to heat the room. However their efficiency is limited by their surface area - underfloor heating mats have a much larger surface area and so are able to heat a room without using as much energy.
This use of convection currents to heat a room also brings with it another problem - the movement in the air can result in 'air-infiltration' whereby cold air from outside the room or building is drawn into the room, cooling the air that the radiator has only just heated. The underfloor heating mats do not have this problem - most of the heat energy created using heating mats takes the form of radiation, not convection, so the air is kept static and air-infiltration cannot occur.
Underfloor mats used on a heat-absorbing surface such as concrete will also have an advantage over traditional radiators because the floor underneath them will tend to trap the heat - and so continue to heat the room long after they have stopped operating.
The simplicity of electrical systems makes them incredibly reliable - they rarely need to be serviced and it is an even more rare event that they break down, particularly in the absence of any moving parts such as fans.
Better For The Environment
Electric underfloor heating mats have the advantage of being able to translate almost all of the electrical energy put into them into heat for the room. Their placement directly underneath the floor makes underfloor heating mats a direct acting heat source. This means that they have a very quick 'warm-up' period when compared to other 'storage-heater' style systems. There is also a complete absence of any sort of 'idling' time, as with water based heaters. Electric systems have the potential advantage of being programmable too and unlike their water-based counterparts are easily shut off. This means that they only need to operate when they are needed - such as during the evenings or weekends - and thus can reduce the amount of waste energy that is put into the heating system.
Underfloor heating mats are also incredibly easy to install. They come ready-made and do not require the floor to be dug up and re-laid in order to set them up or maintain them. The result of this is that, not only do you only have minimal disruption to your home, but you also require minimal energy expenditure when installing them in the first place. It also reduces the waste of building materials which digging up the floors would inevitably produce.
The nature of a building's heating system is of paramount importance to its overall carbon footprint. Whilst heating is not by any means the only factor in your home's efficiency, if you are at all interested in reducing your carbon footprint and the overall environmental impact that your household has, then it is important to give some consideration as to how your home is heated, as well as looking at the possibilities of insulation and waste output.
